There’s explosive Fusion Grenades, the searing plasma burning firepower of the pistol-like Combuster, the heavy Pyrocitor - a large gun that spews super hot flames - and even a spaceship to take you between the different planets to complete objectives. The story of how these two perfect strangers came together is told with lots of humor, but what would Ratchet and Clank be without space age weapons and other gizmos. This reboot feels like the closest thing to a playable Pixar adventure. The constant variety helped each world stand on it’s own with plenty of memorable, up-close combat mixed in. At another moment, I had to use my own space jet to repel a warship attack and save the day. On Kerwan, I had to stop a train from delivering a nasty payload to the venerated Hall of Heroes. Just when planet Rilgar’s rocky setting had me wondering if it would be a redux of the first planet in this adventure, I was flushed into an interconnected network of sewer pipes with a handy new gadget to move water in and out of empty spaces. The levels themselves bounce between focused pathways akin to a 3D Super Mario game, but Insomniac also knows when to throw a curveball to shake things up. Whether I was trekking across the dry, canyon-filled landscape Veldin, or saving a quaint, grassy city from invasion on Novalis, stopping a bomb from reaching the Hall of Galactic Heroes on Kerwan, or gawking at the rugged terrain of Arid, each setting conveyed a distinct and playful vibe and unique stages to platform through. No matter what planet I chose to play through, I couldn’t help but walk away slack-jawed by the stunning art direction and lively atmosphere.
That’s a high benchmark for the series, and one that developer Insomniac Games has shot for in the past, but what I played of this reimagined origin story blends together the right mix of jaw-dropping technology, witty humor, and explosive set pieces.įrom the sophistication and great detail of the graphics alone, this is looking to be one of the most visually impressive games of this console generation.
Similar to the way The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker transformed Nintendo’s fantasy world into a fully-realized cartoon, this reboot feels like the closest thing to a playable Pixar adventure set in space. The series always had lovely, far reaching vistas and good combat, but the shiny textures and lively character animation are on a new level of quality.
Mere minutes into Ratchet & Clank, I can’t help but appreciate its super polished look.
